The Ultimate Cloud Migration Checklist for UAE Enterprises

Published: December 2023 • 6 min read

Migrating from on-premise servers to the cloud is no longer a question of "if," but "when." With major providers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud now hosting local data centers in the UAE, the barriers to entry have never been lower.

However, a poorly planned migration can result in downtime, data loss, and skyrocketing costs. Use this checklist to ensure your migration is seamless.

Phase 1: Assessment and Strategy

  • Audit Current Infrastructure: Map out all current servers, databases, and dependencies. You cannot migrate what you don't track.
  • Determine Data Residency Requirements: Does your data need to stay within the UAE physically? (Crucial for healthcare, finance, and enterprise sectors). Ensure you select a provider with a local region (e.g., AWS Middle East - UAE).
  • Choose a Migration Strategy:
    • Rehost (Lift and Shift): Moving applications as-is. Fast, but doesn't take full advantage of cloud features.
    • Replatform: Making slight optimizations (e.g., moving to a managed database service).
    • Refactor: Completely rewriting the application for cloud-native architecture (microservices, serverless). Slowest, but yields the highest long-term ROI.

Phase 2: Planning and Proof of Concept

  • Cost Estimation: Use the AWS/Azure pricing calculators. Warning: Cloud costs can spiral if resources are not monitored. Plan for FinOps (Financial Operations) from day one.
  • Security & Compliance Mapping: Define your Identity and Access Management (IAM) policies. Plan how you will meet NESA (National Electronic Security Authority) standards if required.
  • Pilot Migration: Migrate a non-critical application first to test the waters and establish your workflow.

Phase 3: Execution

  • Data Migration: Move the database. Depending on the size, this might be over the internet, or require physical transfer devices (like AWS Snowball) for massive datasets.
  • Application Migration: Deploy the application code.
  • Testing: Perform rigorous QA, penetration testing, and load testing in the cloud environment.

Phase 4: Optimization

  • Right-sizing: Monitor CPU and memory usage after a few weeks. You may find you over-provisioned your cloud servers and can downgrade them to save money.
  • Implement Auto-Scaling: Ensure your application can automatically add or remove servers based on traffic demands.
